The Triangle Keelback

A water snake native to Southeast Asia, including Thailand. This species, which grows to a length of approximately 70-100 centimeters, is identifiable by the unique triangular patterns along its back, a feature that gives it its distinctive name.

The Striped Keelback has a slender body with a light brown or olive-green coloration, accented by distinct dark stripes running along its back. This pattern helps it blend seamlessly into its surroundings. It is commonly found near rivers, streams, and ponds, as it is a strong swimmer and prefers habitats with abundant water.

Its diet primarily consists of small fish, frogs, and aquatic invertebrates. The Striped Keelback hunts by ambushing its prey and using its quick reflexes to secure a meal. Despite its somewhat intimidating appearance, this snake is non-venomous and poses no threat to humans.

In Khao Sok National Park, the Striped Keelback is often seen near wetlands or water bodies, where it thrives in the humid, tropical environment. While harmless, visitors should be mindful of their surroundings when exploring riverside trails or wet areas to avoid startling these snakes or other local wildlife.

As a key predator in aquatic ecosystems, the Striped Keelback plays a vital role in maintaining the ecological balance of Khao Sok National Park, highlighting the park’s incredible biodiversity.
