Coral Fungus Mushroom

Resembling delicate sea coral, this unique mushroom comes in shades of white, yellow, orange, and pink. Thriving in humid forest environments, Khao Sok National Park is a prime location to find an abundance of these fascinating coral fungi.

Characteristics of Shelf Fungus:

Shape: Grows in distinct, layered formations that resemble shelves or brackets protruding from tree trunks or fallen logs.

Colors: Varies widely, with shades of brown, gray, orange, and even vibrant reds or yellows, often with concentric rings or velvety textures.

Habitat: Shelf fungi thrive in humid environments, commonly found on decaying wood in the dense rainforests of Khao Sok National Park, where moisture and organic matter are abundant.

Ecological Role: As decomposers, they play a key role in breaking down tough lignin and cellulose, recycling nutrients back into the forest floor and promoting healthy ecosystem dynamics.

Importance:

Beyond their striking appearance, shelf fungi are essential to forest health, supporting nutrient cycles and providing habitats for insects and other small organisms. Protecting the habitats of these fungi is vital for preserving the rich biodiversity of Khao Sok National Park.
