History of Cheow Lan Lake

Cheow Lan Lake, also called Ratchaprapha Dam, is a stunning highlight of Khao Sok National Park. It was formed in 1987 with the construction of Ratchaprapha Dam, an earthen dam with a clay core built for hydroelectric power. Spanning approximately 185 square kilometers, the reservoir reaches a maximum depth of around 94 meters, creating a breathtaking landscape of limestone cliffs and emerald waters.

Cheow Lan Lake is often called the “Guilin of Thailand” for its stunning resemblance to China’s Guilin, with towering limestone karsts and emerald-green waters. These dramatic rock formations and scattered islands create a mesmerizing and one-of-a-kind landscape.
